Treating a Prostate Gland Infection

Of all the different problems that can develop in the prostate, one of the most serious is an infection. Treating a prostate gland infection is definitely not always the easiest thing. This is not only because they can be so stubborn to treat but as well because a prostate gland infection is typically very painful.

You should be aware of the issue of prostate gland stimulation and of what the symptoms of a prostate gland infection are, so that you will know what to watch out for and be able to recognize the signs if you develop a prostate gland infection yourself.

Signs and Symptoms

There are quite a few different symptoms that are associated with a prostate gland infection. The signs and symptoms of this condition will vary, depending on the person and the cause of the inflammation. Symptoms of this infection, also known as prostatitis, are nonspecific and have been known to mimic other urologica and nonurologic diseases. One might experience no symptoms at all, which would obviously make it close to impossible to diagnose.

Spring Herb Guide: Cordyceps

Spring Herb Guide: Cordyceps

If you have been feeling sluggish or fatigued, you may want to consider the traditional Chinese mushroom cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis). Long used in China as an energizing tonic for people debilitated by age, illness, or injury, it more recently has been used by athletes to help increase aerobic capacity and endurance. Cordyceps can help you to overcome general weakness and fatigue, and acts as a tonic for physical stamina and mental energy.

Wild cordyceps grows on the larvae of certain moths, and the preparation commonly used in China is the whole, dried mushroom attached to a mummified larva, often simmered in soup. In the United States it is available in tincture, powder and as a liquid extract - look for liquid or powdered extracts grown on grain, not grown on caterpillars. To address general weakness or fatigue, adults can take 1-2 capsules per day (or follow dosage advice on product); for health maintenance, take 1 capsule once or twice per week. Children should not take cordyceps.

Treatment & Prevention Tips for Fungal Infections of the Skin

Treatment & Prevention Tips for Fungal Infections of the Skin

The control of dampness is the most important factor in pre-venting fungal infections of the feet and groin. Measures to promote dryness also increase the likelihood of curing these infections. The toes and groin should be very carefully dried after bathing, undressing, and whenever possible if they become moist. The liberal application of a drying powder, such as an antifungal powder, is helpful. Cotton socks and underwear absorb moisture very well, but nylon does not. Boxer shorts are preferred to tight-fitting briefs, because they allow the groin to "breathe."

Likewise, aeration of the feet is very desirable. This can be promoted by going barefooted, wearing sandals, or wearing "ventilated" shoes. Shoes with rubber soles, especially sneakers or tennis shoes, provide poor aeration. Shoes made of nonporous leather, plastic, cordovon, or some synthetic materials also fail to allow proper ventilation of the feet and should be avoided. Cork or felt inserts in the shoes may help absorb some moisture. Cotton or gauze inserted between the toes will help keep the infected areas dry but should be removed upon becoming wet. One must be very persistent with these measures during warmer weather.

Black Bean Soup

Black Bean Soup

Black beans, also known as "turtle beans," are an especially tasty variety, and make a lovely soup. As with most dried beans, they are inexpensive while offering a bounty of fiber, protein, folic acid, potassium and magnesium. Do not salt dried beans while they are cooking as the salt slows down the softening process. And a word about the sherry commonly added to this soup: forget "cooking" wines or sherries. They contain lots of added salt and very little in the way of flavor. Do your palate and your body a favor and use a drinkable sherry in this recipe.

Ingredients

1 pound black beans

1 bay leaf

Biting Your Nails?

Biting Your Nails?

Nail biting is one of the most common symptoms of stress. Some people will eventually stop of their own accord, but there are many among us who haven't been able to break the habit. While it can be embarrassing, and thus a source of anxiety as well as a response to it, there are some ways to minimize biting the nails.

Try hypnotherapy as well as relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises, biofeedback or yoga to help reduce underlying stress.

Biting Your Nails?

Use a tooth guard. This removable, molded device fits either the upper or lower teeth, is barely visible and makes it impossible to bite the nails.

Bitterness: A Mental Illness?

Bitterness: A Mental Illness?

Ever met someone who is so bitter about a perceived wrong done to them that they can barely get through the day? Unfortunately, you probably have - deeply bitter people are not uncommon. You might even be one yourself! But are such people mentally ill?

According to a May 25, 2009, story in the Los Angeles Times, some psychiatrists are urging classification of bitterness as a mental illness under the name "post-traumatic embitterment disorder." The behavior was discussed before an enthusiastic audience at a May meeting of the American Psychiatric Assn. in San Francisco.

"They feel the world has treated them unfairly. It's one step more complex than anger. They're angry plus helpless," said Dr. Michael Linden, a German psychiatrist who named the behavior. Linden estimates that one to two percent of the population meets the criterion for the condition.

Exercise Ideas: Cross-Country Skiing

Exercise Ideas: Cross-Country Skiing

Cross-country skiing is rated as the best aerobic exercise by many fitness experts. Besides simply being fun:

It works more muscles and muscle groups than activities such as running or bicycling.

It conditions the cardiovascular system efficiently.

Risk of injury is low.

Mastery of this sport can give you a great deal of pleasure, making it likely you’ll stick with it.

The disadvantages are obvious - you can do it on a regular basis only if you live in a suitable area, and then only seasonally; most people have to learn how to ski, probably from an instructor; and you have to buy and maintain the necessary equipment.
