Post Radiotherapy Care (Cancer)


During the treatment and after the radio therapy treatment the patient’s body needs variety of foods to maintain healthy tissues and rebuild new tissues.


1. Dryness of mouth : Drink 8-10 glasses of fluids throughout the day.


2. Sore mouth and throat:


a. Avoid hot, spicy and irritating foods


b. Avoid alcohol and smoking.


c. Avoid very hot and very cold foods. Allow hot food to cool to moderate temperature.


d. To sooth your mouth rinse daily with a mouth wash made with, ¼ tsp, Baking powder ¼ tsp, in one glass water.


e. Modify the diet consistency to suit individual need. Blend all foods in high speed mixed to liquid or semi-solid consistency for easy swallowing.


f. Milk/soup could form base for each such feed to avoid irritation to the mouth.


3. Loss of taste & smell:


To improve taste and flavor, use variety of flavoring and aromatic agents e.g. Green coriander, Mint, Lemon, Cardamom, Cinnamon (Hara Dhania, Pudina, nimbu, illachi, dal chini,) essence like, vanilla, rose etc. Syrups, milk shake, fruit shakes and chocolate enhance taste.


4. Depressed Appetite:


Eat what you like, when you like and the way you like but do not miss any meal. Take fewer amounts of food but at frequent intervals.


5. Nausea:


Try carbonated beverages, cold jelly, ice creams.


6. Loose motions/indigestion:


Take liquids at frequent intervals and then improve gradually to semi-liquids and semi-solid.


Have a Choice


Consistency wise the patients daily may include items as under:


A. Liquid:


Water, tea, coffee, nimbu pani, aerated water, lassi, syrups, squashes, fruit juices, soup and whey water.


b. Semi-liquids:


Milk could be enriched with egg yolk, milk powder, honey, horlicks, protinex, speat, complain, milk fruit shake, cornflakes.


c. Semi-solids (Gruels):


Wheat, dalia, suji-halva, khichari, custard, kheer, rice phirni, egg pudding. Cooked dalls, mashed potatoes and veg with butter, fruit stews.
